Well my first impression when I heard about Nintendo releasing yet another version of the DS was "Why would they do that, they should be working on the NEXT awesome hand held gaming device instead of re-releasing the same one over and over" but after looking into it further, I found that what they have actually done is quite possibly turned a great gaming device into what is quite possibly the PERFECT portable gaming device. (well ... perfect for at least 6 months or so)

The first thing that caught my attention was the fact that the DSi will now have 3 senses, touch (touchscreen) and hearing(mic) like its predecessors, but it now has sight! The DSi has been fitted with two cameras, one on the inside that will be used by many of the new games that are being designed for it, and another on the outside. The inner camera is 0.3MP and some sites have claimed the external camera is 3MP but this is still unknown.

They have made the screens 17% bigger (3.25in) and apparently the sound will also be much improved, but that's not all. They have done away with the Advance slot but now added a SD card slot to the DSi, so even though Nintendo spent loads of money and time suing companies that distribute Slot1 devices, they are now basically saying "cut the middle man and just load up the software on you're SD card and plug it in."

I am very interested as to how the DSi firmware will be as they have added music playback options, integrated the DSBrowser (an Opera based Internet browser) and added options to download software from a DSi store. Will this mean that it will be able to run homebrew apps with no modifications? Only time will tell.

One other thing that I have not seen mentioned is the memory of the DSi. The DSBrowser uses more memory than is available on the original DS and DSLight and required a card that boosted the memory to be placed in the Advance slot. Now with that slot gone and the DSBrowser coming stock on the DSi the memory must have been improved. This will also mean that games will be able to use more resources and have improved graphics.

I will have a video up soon so check out the videos section to see the DSi in action.
