Just a few days ago Nintendo along with 54 software developers filed a lawsuit against 5 Tokyo companies that are distributors of various DS Slot 1 devices such as the popular R4DS. Nintendo's demands are that these companies stop the importation and sales of the devices in Japan.

This has come straight after similar news of retailers wanting a ban on the devices in the UK after reporting decreased sales.

You may be thinking that this does not really affect us Australians but that's where your wrong. I have already been in contact with one of Australia's top distributors of NDS Slot1 devices and prices are expected to rise by a minimum of 20% in the next week alone.

"The publicity will create a demand on the cards as new people become aware , whilst production and exportation slows we expect to see dramatic increases in the prices."

And it does not stop there. It is speculated that depending on the outcome of the lawsuit in Japan, Nintendo will file further lawsuits towards global distributors.

"If you have friends or family that are interested in obtaining one of these cards, don't delay as its only a matter of time before these cards will most likely be banned in Australia
(once Nintendo takes action against importers around the globe)."

I have a Slot 1 device myself, and although the device is predominately used for illegal games, I myself have a passion for homebrew apps and games such as CIIRC (a very good IRC client), DSOrginize (A full organiser/planner suit + much more), and Still Alive DS (a port of the free flash version of the game Portal), not to mention many others like the DS Linux distribution, homebrew DS Browsers, MP3 players etc.

Yeah I have an Edge myself.... it was cheaper than the R4 and I've never had a problem with it.

Hmmm, I am interested in getting a DS and one of these so I can use 3rd party software and shiz... but I don't know when I will be able to a get a DS so I don't know if I should buy this now or just not get it at all. This is indeed a puzzling situation.

Get one now, if you don't end up getting a DS then you can sell it later. If this does effect prices, you might more than what you paid if you do sell it :p

I'm pretty much set. I have my m3real as my primary, and a slot 2 somewhere on my desk that doesn't handle recent roms all that well, but works well for homebrew.
